Proposal Summary

THIS Project is aimed at creating a sustainable supply of water and to increase availability, accessibility, and hygiene in ayua Village, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria.

The people of Etsako West Local Government have their administrative headquarters in Auchi. It is made up of four clans; Uzairue, Auchi, Ayua, South Ibie, Awain clan … It has an area of 946 km² and a population of 197,609 at the 2006 census.

Purpose of the Project

“The demand for water is increasing at an exponential rate relative to the world’s population growth rate and poverty is the most significant factor that interferes with meeting that demand,” as relayed by officials at the 3rd World Water Forum. Clean water has become increasingly inaccessible to a vast majority of people in our world. According to the World Health Organization, there are 2.2 million diarrhea deaths related to unsafe water, sanitation, and hygiene every year. The great majority of deaths are children in developing countries. The Environment News Service also affirms that approximately one half of indigenes in developing countries are suffering from diseases caused directly by infection through the consumption of contaminated water or food, or indirectly by pathogens such as mosquitoes that breed in water.

Nigeria is no exception to this predicament. For this reason, our proposal will take an exclusive focus towards increasing water supply, availability, accessibility, sanitation and hygiene in ayua Village of Etsako Local Government Area, Nigeria.

The community over the years, had poor water supply and its scarcity is in alarming rate.  Surface water such as those found in nearby river, lake and some other surface cavity, has always been the major source of water supply to the community.  This water is usually not very high in mineral content, and is often called “soft water” even though it is probably not. Surface water is exposed to many different contaminants, such as animal wastes, pesticides, insecticides, industrial wastes, algae and many other organic materials.
The surface water found in what seems like pristine mountain streams can be contaminated by wild animal waste, dead animals upstream or other decay.

However, the streams and rivers normally reduce in volumes during dry seasons; water from these sources are not treated and are prone to pollution as erosion often erode wastes into the various streams and rivers. Most times, water from these sources is being supplied at interval of every after two to three days per week and some times over three days while the inhabitants, as a result of population growth, need to have daily water supply for drinking, gardening, for toilets sanitation and flower growing.

In order to avert these menace in ayua village of Etsako Local Government Area, the project is there aimed at increasing good water supply. Our initial intervention strategy will be to construct a bore-hole. Pipe-borne water is an important tool for increasing water supply as it helps transport water from water sources to communities in need. This measure will increase water access through drilling boreholes at proper geophysical survey areas with a considerable distance from septic tanks, unlined pit latrines and waste dump sites.

As said earlier, across Nigeria there is sickening prevalence of bad quality water in the country. People have thus resigned to fetching water from questionable sources such as polluted rivers, lakes, unsafe wells and pipes. These dirty water sources are a source of water-related diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, dysentery and their likes. As an intervention strategy towards increasing availability of clean water for households, we will teach the indigenes of Ayua town to adopt a culture of household water treatment and safe storage practices.

  1. To create a sustainable supply of clean water in Ibie Village, Nigeria.
  2. To enlighten the indigenes of Ibie Village on the importance of clean water.
  3. To educate the indigenes on how to carry out healthy house-hold treatment and storage procedures relating to clean water sustainability.
  4. To increase the overall availability, accessibility, sanitation, and hygiene of water in Ibie Village, Edo State, Nigeria.

We intend for this project to be highly sustainable. As a result of this, we plan to establish a commission in Etsako West Local Government through which the leaders of the village as well as the members of the churches sited around the bore-hole is intended to be drilled will take active part in the planning, execution and implementation of the bore-hole. We intend for this project to be highly community-based as this will help establish cohesion in the establishment of the project and promote positive peace.

The commission will consist of representatives from churches and other key personalities of the community. We trust that the Churches on their own will serves as an agent of sustenance of this project.

At the end of completion of this project, we would have taught the people on how to make water clean and healthy for consumption by teaching them through practical hands-on training on the importance of boiling water. We will appoint an overseer from the Church organizations who is competent and literate to report on a monthly basis to us on the project progress and sustainability.

  1. Geophysical Survey
  2. Drilling and Casing
  3. Installation of pumps and accessories
  4. Formation of Water Maintenance Fund (WMF) which will be formed by the community, the fund will be contributed by the communities to support them to manage, to maintain and repair their pump.
  5. Purchasing and transportation of building material this activity will be done soon after receiving fund from the appropriate authority or sponsor.

The groundwater exploration to be carried out on the site is to be done using electrical resistivity sounding techniques (VES). This can be achieved with the aid of ABEM AC Terrameter and other field accessories. Geographical coordinates and elevations can be obtained from the GARMIN GPS map 76CSx’ set. Hydro-geophysical deductions made from the interpreted VES data, establishes the feasibility of a viable groundwater abstraction project at the site.

A total drilled depth of 197m (650ft) is recommended. In addition, a suitable drilling rig that can effectively drill to the required specifications and depth should be mobilized to the site.

The proposed water supply from a bore hole: The existing facilities include

  1. Electricity supply which runs along the proposed site.
  2. A bore hole to be drilled in the area to the depth of 197m (650ft) and installed with PVC pipe casings, a water tower to carry the 10,000 liters high yield steel storage tank will be constructed.
  3. Also electricity supply to power the pumps will be required. In addition, pipe lines to carry the water from the bore hole to the tank and distribute the water to the distribution point/consumers points from the tank, after conducting water quality analysis at water laboratory.

The entire (On-the-site) drilling process should be supervised and documented by a competent and professional geologist and hydro-geologist who should also determine the final/terminal depth of the borehole at the site.

To establish water quality and portability, a full analysis of the water sample from the developed borehole should be done at a reputable laboratory for physio-geo-chemical and biological analysis, in order to ascertain the

hydro-geochemical impurity determination of the groundwater, so as to pin-point the exalt type of water treatment plant-unit to be installed. In addition to the pump testing a 5.5HP submersible pump was installed.

The work is going to be done by experienced drilling companies with both manual and mechanical/electrical drilling equipment at reasonable rates.

Water is life. Water serves as a basic human resource for drinking, farming, cooking and various sanitary activities. This project will change the lives of the people who live, work, go to school, and worship in Ibie community.  The lifestyle of Nigerians exposes the people of Ibie community to an appalling way of life. This community drink from the same river water that contains toxic waste. We consider this an outrage to humanity. We understand what it means to get ill from drinking unsafe water. These people have been exposed to such conditions due to the lack of access to clean and affordable drinking water. With the help of Associazione Famiglia Cristiana di Deborah e Carol Onlus, we intend to help improve the health and sanitary lifestyle of the people in Ibie community. We trust that the proposed Project will allow the citizens of Ibie community this basic human need.
